WILKES, Pa. - Ten members of the University of Virginia wrestling team competed individually in the 69th Open Wrestling Championships at Wilkes University. UVa's Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) was one of five Cavaliers to finished .500 or better in the event after he took fourth place in the 157 lbs. weight class. There was no team scoring in the meet.

Carlo-Clauss finished 4-2 overall at 157 and won his first three consecutive matches after defeating Morrisville's Anthony Champion (MD, 8-0), Harvard's Brandon Kaufman (8-3) and George Mason's Chad Scheidegger (8-3). After dropping a close 7-5 decision to Pittsburgh's Justin Nestor, Carlo-Clauss defeated Cornell's Joe Mazzurco 3-0 before falling to Pittsburgh's Zach Doll by the score of 4-3 in the third place bout.

Virginia's duo of Byron Dunlap (York, Pa./Dallastown) and Paul Dunstan (Oberlin, Ohio/St. Edwards) each turned in a 3-2 mark at 125 and 149, respectively. Dunlap posted a 14-2 major decision over F&M's Will Filbert (F&M), pinned Justin Thomas (unat.) at 1:25 into his third match and earned a victory over Justin Thomas (unat.) due to a medical forfeit at 125. Like Carlo-Clauss, Dunstan also won his first three consecutive matches after topping Rutgers' Peter Deignan (MD, 11-3), Maritime's John Guccione (Fall @ 2:16) and UPJ's Ryan Ickes (8-2) at 149 before George Mason's Adrian Austin handed him his first loss after a tough 1-1 tie breaking bout defeat.

The Cavaliers' John Christopher (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) and James Savia (Bellmore, N.Y./Chaminade) each finished 2-2 at 149 and 165, respectively. Christopher posted back-to-back major decision victories in his first two matches at 149 with a 10-0 win over Wilkes' Jed Starner and a 12-0 victory over Harvard's Kendrick Sadler. Savia also won back-to-back matches at 165 after pinning Middlesex's Keith Miano (fall @ 2:20) and defeating Blair's Joe Casella.

UVa's trio of Reed Landry (McLean, Va./Potomac School), Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Andrew DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) each recorded a victory in the event. Landry defeated Bucknell's Jonathon Spivak by the score of 8-6 at 149, Durkee topped ESU's Anthony Petrock by the count of 5-1 at 165 and DeMartino earned a 2-2 overtime decision over Penn's Nick Thomas at 197.

The Cavaliers' Paul Bjorlo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) and Scott Douglas (Lake Junaluska, N.C./Tuscola) also competed in the event. Bjorlo went 0-2 at 149 and Douglas finished 0-2 at 157.

Virginia will return to action on Saturday, December 5th when UVa hosts Lock Haven and George Mason in a pair of dual matches. The Cavaliers will face Lock Haven at 12:00 p.m. and will meet George Mason at 4:00 p.m. Both dual matches will be held in Memorial Gymnasium.
