CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-- University of Virginia junior guard Tiffany Bower (Richmond, Va./Monacan) suffered a torn Achilles tendon in practice yesterday and may be out for the season. Team physician, Dr. Frank McCue, performed the surgery this morning to attach the two ends of the tendon in her lower left leg. This is the same injury that Bower suffered on her right leg on March 13. She will be in a cast for five to six weeks. Bower is the second player to be sidelined this season with an injury. Senior guard Monick Foote was diagnosed with a stress fracture in her right tibia two weeks ago and has decided to redshirt this year. Ironically, Bower started her last three games of the 1997 season in place of the injured Monick Foote before suffering the injury on the eve of the NCAA Tournament. Bower averaged 7.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and recorded a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds in the Feb. 23 game against North Carolina.

The Cavaliers open their season Nov. 16 at home against William and Mary.
