Sarah Imovbioh came off the bench to log a double-double
Feb. 14, 2013
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Virginia women's basketball fell 61-49 at Boston College.
Sarah Imovbioh (So., Abuja, Nigeria) had her fourth double-double of the season, her first since Dec. 29, with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Boston College's Kerri Shields hit seven three-pointers helping to lead her Eagles (10-14, 4-9 ACC) to the upset of the Cavaliers (15-9, 7-6 ACC).
The Cavaliers held the early advantage, going up 18-11 on a layup by Imovbioh with 8:01 left in the first half but a pair of fouls by the Cavaliers and a three-pointer from Shields erased the lead in one minute, 18 seconds, knotting the game 18-18 with 6:43 left in the half. After a bucket from Jazmin Pitts (Jr., Mosely, Va.), who returned to the court after missing the last four games with a concussion, gave the Cavaliers a 20-18 lead, BC went on a 9-0 run to go up 27-20.
A pair of buckets from Faith Randolph (Fr., Derwood, Md.), who made her second career start, helped the Cavaliers narrow the gap. A layup from Imovbioh with 41 seconds left in the half made it a 30-29 game before Shields hit her fifth three of the game 11 seconds later. The Cavaliers held for the last shot with Ataira Franklin (Jr., Bowie, Md.) fighting through defenders to hit a jumper down low with three seconds left in the half, sending the team into the break trailing 33-31.
Virginia retook the lead, 39-38, after Kelsey Wolfe (Jr., Germantown, Md.) was fouled on a three-point attempt. She made two of the free throws to give UVa a 39-38 advantage with 14:47 remaining.
With the game tied 40-40, BC's post Katie Zenevitch scored eight straight points, giving the Eagles a 48-42 lead. Franklin pulled up for a jumper in the lane to end the run with 7:57 left in the game. Shields answered with her seventh three-pointer of the game.
The Cavaliers made just one basket in the final five minutes of the game, a jumper by Randolph with 1:39 remaining.
Simone Egwu (Sr., Odenton, Md.) ended the game with 12 points, going 6-of-8 from the field. She also had five rebounds, a steal, and an assist.
Imovbioh's 15 rebounds matched the highest single-game rebounding total by a Cavalier in a game this season, equaling the 15 pulled in by Egwu at Georgia Tech.
Boston College went 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from three-point range. Franklin hit the Cavaliers' lone three in the team's 15 attempts.
The Cavaliers were playing without their leading rebounder, Telia McCall (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) who was sidelined with a concussion.
The Cavaliers will return home to host No. 7 Maryland on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Maryland game will be the Play 4Kay game. All fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
