Post Game Quotes: Virginia at Penn

Recap |  Final Stats

Head Coach Joanne Boyle:

We didn't come out and play our normal style. We ended up changing what we do, which is the match-up zone, but we got lackadaisical. Penn had a lot of fight and a lot of fire. They didn't back down. They're smart. I think we got outhustled in the first half. Where I am proud of my team is we came back in the second half and were playing man-to-man. We were switching everything. I thought we did a much better job on the boards. We were attacking. We were a little more poised. We had a couple of people step up and make some big plays.

On the play of Kelsey Wolfe
She really put the team on her shoulders. Every time they made a basket, she got us a basket. She got us a stop. She got us a free throw. She did a great job. More than anything, I noticed how poised she was in the second half. She was calm and poised. The rest of the team wasn't. That's what we need from our point guards.

On dominating the second half rebounding
We were in man-to-man so each was responsible for an individual person. I think that helped us out. I think there was just a commitment on our part. Rebounding has been our Achilles heel last year. It was why we lost a lot of games. They have made a commitment that is not going to be who they are this year.

Junior guard Kelsey Wolfe

We knew we had to regroup and come out with a different intensity than we did in the first half and just play defense.

It's something that just comes out in me. I just really wanted to win. I just kind of lost control.

On her and-one's
During a timeout, Coach Corey came up to me and told me `Drive baseline. It's open. Don't force it if the middle's not there. I saw an opening. Just took it to the hole and finished strong. On one of the and-ones, Telia blocked someone out and gave me a lane to the basket.

Senior forward Telia McCall

We had to focus on the little things and rebounding. We were down on the boards so we had to win that.

Kelsey, she got me hyped. When she got hyped, I got hyped. The whole team followed her. She was off the chain and on fire. We needed that. We needed that push. She got us the two free throws that we needed. She got nine boards. We needed that.

On her steal and layup on the other end towards the end of the game
I knew that the offense was not really falling for me. I was kind of frustrated and knew I had to put that behind me. I can only control the things that I can control, so I knew I had to turn it up on defense. We knew that they liked to shoot threes. We knew they needed a three so I just anticipated it and got my hands up. And then, on the other end, I just kept going hard and somehow it went in the basket.
