Head Coach Joanne Boyle
“We’re glad to be 2-0 at this point of the season and put some points on the board tonight. We’ll chalk it up and move forward.”
On rebounding struggles:
“When you know that you’re up, it’s about discipline and doing the little things. That’s the one thing I said. We didn’t do a very good job. We just watched them and they were beating us on the boards. We let them have what they wanted. That part of it was disappointing. We did a good job against Middle Tennessee. Tonight we got a little lazy.”
On the play of Lauren Moses this season:
“She’s been so rock solid. I think she had 10 or so rebounds in our last game and about seven tonight. She’s been stepping her game up there. She’s been finishing really well and doing a great job defensively for us. She’s been doing a great job all around for us.”
On Virginia’s balanced scoring effort:
“We wanted to spread out the minutes tonight just to see some different rotations and what people could give us if we were in a pinch. It was nice to get Deb [Ferguson] and Jae’Lisa [Allen] in a little bit. We’ve been hoping Deb can go in and give us some good minutes and give some girls a rest. She was very productive in her four minutes tonight and it bought others some time. If we can get five to ten minutes from Deb every game, that would be huge.”
On the overall performance of the team:
“We came out and took some really quick shots in the second half, which led to some transition points for Norfolk State. I wasn’t pleased with that part. After that, I thought we moved the ball well. We have to be more disciplined. In practice, we’re doing a good job on defense and closing out hard by moving our feet. Again, I thought we got a little lazy there when the score got up big. That’s the difference between being good and being great. We have to own those parts of the game on both offense and defense.”
On facing Auburn next game:
“They’re a very athletic team. They’re going to press the whole game, so it’s about being composed and breaking the press and scoring off it. We need to continue to be aggressive and make them pay for pressing.”
Sophomore Forward Lauren Moses
On getting off to a good start:
“It’s very important. With this team, we are just trying to sharpen things up. We’re focusing on getting defensive stops and getting out on transition. So we’re definitely focusing on cleaning things up.”
On regrouping in the third quarter:
“Going into the third quarter, we emphasized attacking and not letting teams get into it. We really wanted to make that effort to get going in the third quarter and be that attacker.”
On game against Middle Tennessee:
“That game sets the tone for the season. It was marked on our calendars from the beginning. We knew it was going to be a grind so it was great that we got that finish.”
Senior Guard Faith Randolph
On her fast-break basket in the first quarter:
“Just being in help defense. We practice that all day in practice, so when the ball is on the opposite side of the court, you have to be in help. I got the steal and I started the fast break, surprisingly. I passed it up to [Breyana Mason] and she gave it back.”
On rebounding going forward into rest of season:
“Moving forward, I think our weak side rebounding has to be better. Like coach said, against Middle Tennessee we did much better. This game, I think we weren’t very disciplined. So moving forward I think we really need to work on our weak side rebounding. As a team, guards and post, we all have to rebound and crash into the boards.”
On her role going into the season:
“I think that when I’m on the court, I just do the best I can to help this team get the win. This year, I’ve been trying to get on the boards more. Last year, I kind of took a back seat and let Assai take that over. This year I’m just trying to stay aggressive on both ends of the floor. Defensively, with hard three quartering and offensively, just facing up and attacking the basket and getting put-backs. I’m never satisfied though. Obviously I have things to work on. Getting more boards, offensively as well, crashing the board harder and getting the fifteen-footer.”
On Lauren Moses:
“Every day she brings her intensity. Her energy for this team is so important. She’s always running up and down the floor on transition offense and transition defense. She’s ready.”
