Virginia Holds Off Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - DeMya Walker had a basket and a key steal in the final 20 seconds and Mimi McKinney scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half to help No. 12 Virginia hold off Maryland 47-45 Monday night.
Trailing 45-44 with 35 seconds left, Walker followed up a McKinney miss with 19.7 seconds left, then stole the ball on an inbounds pass and was fouled.
Walker missed both free throws but Maryland turned the ball over again with 3.3 seconds left, and McKinney added a free throw with 2.4 seconds remaining
Walker finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds as Virginia (17-5, 8-4 Atlantic Coast) overcame a season-high 29 turnovers in winning its fourth straight and improving to 14-0 against Maryland (13-9, 6-6).
Both teams had their lowest point total of the season.
Stephanie Cross scored nine of her game-high 21 points for Maryland in final nine minutes, including a jumper that gave the Terrapins their 45-44 lead.
Both teams struggled in the first half, when Virginia had 17 of its turnovers while the Terrapins had 13. Maryland shot 25 percent (6 of 24) in the first 20 minutes.
The Cavaliers took a 13-2 lead as Maryland missed 13 of its first 14 shots and scored only two points in the first 10 minutes, 52 seconds. But the Terrapins managed to cut the lead to 23-18 at halftime and later climbed back from a 33-22 deficit.
