Virginia Women's Basketball Adds Walk-on to Roster

Jan. 10, 2007

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Freshman Lauren Carson (Alpharetta, Ga.) has earned a spot on the University of Virginia women's basketball team after an open tryout, head coach Debbie Ryan announced on Wednesday.

"We are very pleased that Lauren Carson has joined our team," Ryan said. "She will add depth at the guard position. She's very athletic and will be an excellent defender."

The 5-6 guard was a four-year letterwinner at Chattahoochee High School. As a senior, she averaged 12.0 ppg. During her freshman season, the Lady Cougars advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history. During her sophomore season, Chattahoochee was ranked No. 3 nationally and No. 1 in the state of Georgia. Carson played along side Lindsey Moss, the No. 1 nationally ranked guard, who now plays at Georgia.

Carson's father, Dr. Eric Carson, is an orthopedic surgeon at UVa.

Virginia (10-5, 0-1 ACC) hosts Wake Forest (8-7, 0-2) in its ACC home opener on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
