Virginia (14-5, 3-2 ACC) is coming off of a 57-55 win over Georgia Tech on Sunday, Jan. 24. ACC Preseason Player of the Year and Associated Press Preseason All-American Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) led the Cavaliers with 23 points against the Yellow Jackets and was named ACC Player of the Week for her three performances last week.
In 19 games this season, Wright has 12 20+ point games and four 30+ point games. Her 39 points at Boston College on Jan. 21 tied for the second-highest total in school history (the UVa school record is 48 points) and is the highest scoring game by an ACC player this year.
She leads the team by averaging 22.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Her scoring average leads the ACC and ranks No. 7 in the nation. With 3.7 steals per game, Wright leads the conference in that category and is third in the nation.
As a team, Virginia averages 11.6 steals per game, which ranks 15th in the nation.
Freshman Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) has earned the starting nod for three-straight games and is coming off of a 10-point performance against Georgia Tech. Sophomores Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) and Whitny Edwards (Charlotte, N.C.) rank second and third on the team in scoring with 7.9 and 7.7 ppg, respectively.
NC State (12-8, 2-3 ACC) is coming off of a 81-69 loss to No. 12 North Carolina on Jan. 25. The Wolfpack is led by three players that average double figures for scoring - Bonae Holston (11.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg), Nikitta Gartrell (11.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and Marissa Kastanek (10.4 ppg). NC State head coach Kellie Harper is in her first season after taking over for the late Kay Yow.
Virginia leads the all-time series with NC State, 34-30, but the Wolfpack won last year's regular-season meeting (60-54 in Raleigh on Feb. 15) and has won five of the last six meetings.
