CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Six Virginia student-athletes were named to the 2012-13 Academic All-State team in honors announced Tuesday (6/18) by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
Mark Amirault (Gr., Walpole, Mass.), Sean Keveren (Sr., Brentwood, Tenn.) and Catherine White (Gr., Roanoke, Va.) of the track & field and cross country teams, rowing's Sarah Cowburn (Gr., Worcestershire, England), women's basketball's Simone Egwu (Sr., Odenton, Md.) and wrestling's Matt Snyder (R-Sr., Lewistown, Pa.) were the six Virginia athletes included on the team.
To earn VaSID Academic All-State honors, a student-athlete must have achieved at least a 3.25 grade point average and be at least a sophomore. Each school in the state is allowed six nominees. A total of 221 student-athletes, representing 37 schools in the state, were recognized.
VaSID is comprised of sports information or athletics communications professionals from intercollegiate institutions throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Membership is open to any individual affiliated with one of the state's institutions at the NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, USCAA and community college levels, provided that individual's area of responsibility lies within the realm of sports information.
Amirault, a graduate student studying public health with a 3.94 GPA, qualified for the 2013 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., in the 5000m. An All-ACC honoree after finishing second in the event at this year's ACC Championships, Amirault was also named to the USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic Team and the Capital One Academic All-District team.
Keveren, a senior studying kinesiology with a 3.94 GPA, was a 2012 honorable mention All-American in the 10000m. He is a four-time ACC Honor Roll selection during his career and was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District team.
White, a graduate student studying kinesiology with a 3.84 GPA, won her second consecutive ACC Championship in the 10000m. A five-time All-American during her collegiate career, she missed an opportunity to earn All-America honors against this season as she missed the NCAA Championships due to injury.
Cowburn, an architectural history major with a 3.95 cumulative GPA, won first team Capital One Academic All-America honors this season. Cowburn was named to the 2013 College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-America Second Team and the All-South Region First Team and was a part of the Cavalier Varsity Eight that placed fourth at the NCAA Championships on June 2. At the ACC Championships on May 12, Cowburn was named to the All-ACC team for the second consecutive year and was part of the V8 that claimed the ACC title and was named conference Crew of the Year for the second straight season.
Egwu, a politics major with a 3.39 GPA, was the second player in Virginia women's basketball program history to earn the ACC's Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship. Egwu, the 2012-13 SAAC President, also was awarded the Life Skills Scholarship and was an ACC Top VI Award winner, an annual honor presented to the six UVa student-athletes who have given the most in terms of service to the University and Charlottesville communities. She was a four-year starter for the women's basketball team averaging 5.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Snyder, a kinesiology major with a 3.84 cumulative GPA, is a two-time Academic All-American and was named to the Academic All-District First Team for three consecutive seasons. A four-time All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team honoree, Snyder was named the conference's Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row in 2013 and earned a 2013 ACC Postgraduate Scholarship, the only wrestler in the conference honored. Snyder was a 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championship qualifier and finished one win shy of All-America status by reaching the tournament's round of 12. A third-place finisher in the ACC Championships' competitive 125-pound weight class, Snyder was ranked eighth nationally in both the final NCAA Coaches rankings and the RPI. He finished with a 22-9 record this past season and ended his career as Virginia's ninth-ranked wrestler in total wins with 99.
