Sept. 13, 2012
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia women's basketball team announced its 2012-13 non-conference schedule today. The slate of 11 games features six home contests, including the Cavalier Classic tournament (Dec. 28-29) and a Thanksgiving tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Cavaliers open the season at home at John Paul Jones arena, taking on James Madison on Friday, Nov. 9. Virginia ended the 2011-12 season with a 68-59 loss at James Madison in the WNIT quarterfinals.
The home schedule also includes games against Providence (Nov. 18), West Virginia (Dec. 2) and Coppin State (Dec. 18). The Cavaliers finish off the non-conference slate hosting the Cavalier Classic Dec. 28-29, with Norfolk State, Xavier and Northern Illinois participating.
Virginia will spend Thanksgiving in Puerto Rico, playing Vanderbilt and Syracuse in the San Juan Shootout. Vanderbilt advanced to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament while Syracuse was a semifinalist in the 2012 WNIT. The Cavaliers will also play at Minnesota on Nov. 29 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
UVa will also play at Penn (Nov. 12) and at Alabama (Dec. 21). Virginia previously announced the 18-game ACC portion of the schedule, with the Cavaliers playing seven schools home-and-away (Boston College, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, NC State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest), two schools only at home (Duke, Florida State) and two schools only on the road (North Carolina, Clemson). The schedule features five games that will be broadcast on regional sports networks, two on the ESPN3 digital platform and the home contest on Sunday, Feb. 17 against Maryland will be televised by ESPN2.
The 2013 ACC Tournament will be held March 6-10 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
The Cavaliers return three of their top four scorers and seven letter winners from last season's team that finished 25-11 and advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals. UVa welcomes five newcomers to the program: sophomores Sarah Beth Barnette and Sarah Imovbioh and freshmen Jaryn Garner, Faith Randolph, and Raeshaun Gaffney.
