CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia (3-5) hosts Maryland Eastern Shore (3-6) on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The game will be broadcast live on WINA- 1070 AM with Channing Poole, Larry Johnson and Myron Ripley calling the action.
The Cavaliers, coming off a 12-day break for finals, will play three games this week, also competing in the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Classic Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. beginning with a game Friday afternoon against Tulane and a Saturday evening contest against host-school Florida Gulf Coast.
Virginia returns to action trying to snap a four-game losing streak. Last season, UVa had a five-game losing streak, dropping five of its last six regular-season contests before snapping the streak with a 72-60 victory over No. 24 Florida State. The longest losing streak in school history was a seven-game skid during the 1977-78 season.
The Cavaliers have been outrebounded in six of their eight games this season, including being outrebounded in their last game 41-27 by Michigan. Virginia has also struggled with shot blocking, logging just six this season, which ranks them last among 342 Division I teams in blocked-shots per game. Of those six blocks, five are by guards, including three from senior Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.).
Virginia has turned the ball over fewer times than its opponent in five of the last six games, including UVa committing a season-low nine turnovers in the Michigan game. Virginia is fifth in the ACC with a +3.88 turnover margin.
Senior guard Kelsey Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) has been contributing on the offensive end during the team's skid. In the last four games, Wolfe is averaging 9.8 points per game, including an 18-point performance against Kansas State. Wolfe averaged 6.2 points per game in the first four games of the season. Wolfe is ranked 10th in the ACC in free throw shooting percentage, making 81.8 percent of her attempts.
Freshman forward Sydney Umeri (Acworth, Ga.) led the team in rebounding against Michigan, pulling in eight boards while also scoring eight points. It was the first time she had paced the Cavaliers in rebounds in a game. Umeri is currently second on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.6 per game.
Junior center Sarah Imovbioh (Abuja, Nigeria) scored 13 points against Michigan. Imovbioh is averaging 16.5 ppg in her last two contests, making 54.2 percent of her shots (13-of-24). Imovbioh comes into the week ranked 10th in the ACC in rebounds per game at 8.3 and she continues to lead the conference in offensive rebounds, averaging 4.6 per game.
Senior guard Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) has five assists and four steals in the last two games. Gerson comes into the week ranked ninth in the ACC with 2.4 steals per game.
Sophomore guard Faith Randolph (Derwood, Md.) has had at least one steal in each of the last five games, averaging 2.2 per game during that span.
UMES has dropped three games in a row, including a 105-46 loss on Sunday (Dec. 15) at No. 20 Oklahoma. It was the second time this season an opponent crossed the century mark in a game against the Lady Hawks as Syracuse earned a 113-42 victory on Nov. 20.
Junior guard Jessica Long, who averages 15.6 points per game, leads the Lady Hawks. Junior guard Shawnee Sweeney, who is averaging 10.9 points per game, has made 26 three-pointers this season with only 18 of her 112 field goal attempts coming from inside the arc.
