1991 NCAA Final Four March 30-31, 1991 at New Orleans, Louisiana
Virginia advanced to its first national championship appearance with a 61-55 victory over Connecticut in the semifinal game on March 30, 1991. Connecticut was coached by former UVa assistant coach Geno Auriemma. Tennessee defeated defending national champion Stanford, 68-60, in the other semifinal game to advance to the final the Lady Vols rallied to defeat Virginia in overtime, 70-67, in the national championship game Tennessee led 27-26 at halftime, but Dawn Staley led the Cavaliers in the second half the score was tied at 60 at the end of regulation the championship was the first NCAA Final Four overtime title game Staley scored a championship game record 28 points and added 11 rebounds. Staley was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player, marking the first time the award was given to a player from the losing team Tennessee's Dena Head also scored 28 points to share the scoring record. Staley and Cardoza were named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament team Virginia registered the first 30-win season in school history.
