Charlottesville, Va.--The 1999 Virginia field hockey team showed both offensive and defensive mettle as they defeated the Eagles of American University 5-0 this afternoon in Charlottesville. First-year Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) and second-year Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) both scored an assisted in today's contest to pace the Cavaliers.

USA National team member Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) started the scoring ten minutes into the contest as she connected on a penalty corner off assists from Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and Goodloe. Thirteen minutes later New Jersey mates Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) and Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) worked an incredible breakaway from midfield to score the Cavaliers' second goal. Slocum corralled a long sideline pass from Lindsay in the corner and slotted a pass in front of the goal where it was shoved in by Goodloe for Virginia's third goal with just 5:27 left in the first half.

The Virginia defense held American without a shot in the first half and led at halftime 3-0.

In the second half Slocum scored halfway through the period as she corralled a loose ball brought into the circle by Rosie Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) and stuffed it in the cage for a 4-0 lead. Abby Crawford (Weatherford, Tex./Trinity Valley) closed out the Cavaliers' scoring as she took a long hit from fellow first-year Molly McManus (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and one-timed it into the cage with just 5:13 to go in the game.

Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) started in the cage and made saves on both of American's shots in the second half. She was replaced by Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) with just under 10 minutes to go in the contest.

Virginia opens up its 1999 campaign with a trip to Amherst, Mass. where they will take on the Minutewomen of UMass on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1:00. Virginia will then face Quinnipiac in Amherst at 1:00 on Sunday, Sept. 5. The Cavaliers return home on Friday, Sept. 10 as they host Michigan at 4:00 pm.
