Sept. 10, 2004
The Virginia field hockey team (4-1) battled hard all night long and answered every Boston College (3-2) attack with one of their own, including notching the game-winner 22 seconds after the Eagles had tied the game for the third time to take the lead for good at the 67:06 mark of the game. The short corner defense then had to fend off an attempt as time ticked down, but Logan Carr made her fifth save of the game and Dana Anderson cleared the ball out of the circle to preserve the win. The Cavaliers outcornered the Eagles 8-6, including five in the decisive second half as Virginia outscored the Eagles 3-2 in the final 35 minutes of the game.
Virginia jumped on the board first as Allison Flynn tackled back and took the ball into the circle where she shot from the top and scored at the 9:33 mark of the game to take a 1-0 lead. BC answered as Sabrina Lazzari notched a goal off a short corner shot from Kristen Madden three minutes later to tie the game. The teams went into the break tied at 1-1 despite the Eagles outshooting the Cavaliers 9-5.
In the second half Virginia again came out strong and drew a corner in the first five minutes of the stanza. The Cavaliers capitalized on their third short corner of the half, which they drew as Mia Link stole the ball at the 30 and sent it to Katie Phillips, who took it into the circle where she was fouled. On the corner, a Link shot was saved but Biffy Cornelison, who had inserted the corner, was there for the rebound and sent the ball to the boards to take the lead at the 57:35 mark of the game. Again BC answered right away, drawing a short corner and scoring as Carr made the initial save on the direct corner, but Bronwen Kelly, who had inserted the ball, lifted the ball to the nets to tie the game four minutes after Cornelison's goal.
Virginia again answered, taking the ball up the field and drawing a short corner as Phillips was fouled in the circle. On the corner, Phillips shot the ball and Flynn tipped the ball into the roof of the cage to put the Cavaliers back on top just 98 seconds after BC had tied the game. Again the Eagles answered back as Sara York converted a broken corner at the 66:43 mark of the game.
With just over three minutes to play and the game tied, Virginia marched downfield off of the center pass and Phillips took the ball into the top of the circle and fired the ball to the far corner, scoring just 22 seconds after Boston College to put Virginia up for the fourth time in the game.
With time winding down, BC attacked the left side of the pitch and Julianne Bojanic was assessed a yellow card on a hard tackle, forcing the Cavaliers to play a person down. The Eagles crossed the ball to the top of the circle and drew a corner as the clock ran down. The initial shot was saved by Carr, and Anderson pushed the ball out the circle to end the game.
