NEWTON, Mass. - The No. 16 Virginia field hockey team (5-4, 1-1 ACC) earned a 2-1 overtime victory at No. 9 Boston College (4-4, 1-2 ACC) on Friday (Sept. 23) at the Field Hockey Complex in Newton, Mass.
Senior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) took off on a breakaway during Virginia's first possession of the extra period, racing up the sideline past the Eagles' defenders and into the circle where she smashed a hard shot past the goalie 1:24 into overtime.
"All the credit for this win goes to great teamwork, preparation and determination by our players," said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. "We were able to fix some of the things we worked on since the loss to UConn. The team really followed the game plan and were able to find the goal tonight against a very well-coached BC team."
Boston College took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Lucy Lytle tipped in a cross from Chelcie Mendonca. Senior Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) tied the game with 6:16 remaining in regulation after she dribbled into the circle, split a pair of Eagle defenders and took a hard shot that whizzed past the BC goalkeeper.
Virginia held a 14-10 edge in shots, while BC had four penalty corners to UVA's two.
Both goalies, sophomore Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) and BC's Audra Hampsch, made six saves.
No. 9 Boston College was the third-straight top-10 opponent for the Cavaliers after UVA downed then-No. 10 Princeton last Friday before falling to then-No. 5 UConn on Sunday.
Virginia finishes off its current road trip by playing Fairfield on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn. The Cavaliers will be back home at Turf Field next weekend, hosting No. 14 Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m., and No. 17 Old Dominion on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all regular-season UVA home field hockey games.
