The University of Virginia field hockey team (5-4) notched more short corners than Old Dominion (6-4), but the Cavaliers fell to the Lady Monarchs 4-1 today in Charlottesville. Old Dominion scored three times in a span of 93 seconds in the middle of the first half and added a fourth goal midway through the second period before Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Tex./Trinity Valley) rocketed in a short corner goal off assists from Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) and Sarah Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick).

The Cavaliers were the aggressors early on as they notched the first three shots of the game and were a consistent threat in the Lady Monarch backfield. It was Old Dominion, however, who got on the scoreboard first as Angie Loy took the ball up the middle of the field before dishing it off to Katie Claxton, who was waiting at the right post for the pass. Fifty-five seconds later the Lady Monarchs drew another short corner and Anna Rogers put home the rebound of a Loy shot, giving ODU a 2-0 lead. The Lady Monarchs went ahead 3-0 36 seconds later as Loy again took the ball up the middle of the field and laid the ball off for Rogers, who scored to put ODU up 3-0. The teams went into the break with that score.

In the second half the Cavaliers started with possession and Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) drew a corner in the first 15 seconds. Virginia continued to put pressure on the Lady Monarch cage but again it was ODU who scored first in the half. Off a short corner, Rogers pushed a saved ball over to Janelle Engle, who deposited the ball in the cage for a 4-0 lead with 11:42 to play.

Again the Cavaliers pushed forward and Nicholson drew a short corner. On the play, she inserted to Miller, who stopped the ball for Phillips. Phillips' shot went off the trail and into the cage for the Cavalier goal with 5:00 to play.

Virginia is on the road for their next two games, playing at William and Mary on October 1. Game time against the Tribe is 7:00 pm.
