COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Cavaliers held Maryland to one shot in the
second half and had a corner as time expired in the game, but they could
not get the equalizer and fell to the #3 Terrapins 3-2 today in College
Park. Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) netted both goals for
Virginia and moved to eighth place all-time in the ACC in goals scored with
61.
Maryland got on the board early as Carissa Messimer tipped in a
Keli Smith centering pass just 2:02 into the game. Molly Kauffman tipped in
a Rachel Hiskins pass with just under 10 minutes to play in the half to put
the Terps up 2-0.
With time expired in the first half, Maryland was awarded a penalty
corner which they converted as Hiskins hit a backdoor from Smith to put the
Terrapins up 3-0 at the break.
From there the Cavalier defense roared to life, limiting the
Terrapins to one shot in the stanza. Meanwhile the Cavaliers got on track
offensively as Elwell slammed in a pass from Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis,
Mo./John Buroughs) halfway through the period. She scored her second goal
of the afternoon as she stuffed in a rebound of a Jess Coleman (Oceanport,
N.J./Shore Regional) corner shot at the 9:32 mark.
Just before time expired, the Cavaliers were awarded a corner and
the opportunity to send the game into overtime. But Coleman's shot was
directed out of bounds and the Terrapins prevailed 3-2.
Virginia travels to Richmond on Wednesday, Oct. 6 to face the
Virginia Commonwealth Rams at 7:00 pm.
