Virginia captains Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs), Mason White (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy), and Jessie Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) all contributed to the Cavalier goal in the second half to tie the game, but #12 William & Mary (9-2) scored one more goal in the second half and held on for the win today in Williamsburg. Goodloe's assist was the 45th of her career, moving her into sole possession of second on the all-time assists chart at Virginia, passing Laura Lindsay's 44 (1996-99).
William & Mary got on the scoreboard first as Ann Ekberg sent a crossing pass off a long hit into the circle and Katie Silverthorne batted the ball into the boards 10 minutes into the game.
The Cavaliers tied the game ten minutes later as White brought the ball up the right side of the field and the offense brought the ball into the circle, forcing a corner. Coleman's shot rocketed into the cage, tying the game at 1-1 with 14:44 to play in the half and giving Goodloe the milestone.
In the second half a William & Mary penalty corner resulted in the eventual game-winner, breaking the Cavaliers' two-game winning streak. Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made seven saves on the day.
Virginia returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 4 as the Cavaliers host the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Game time at University Hall Turf Field is 7:00 pm.
