Charlottesville, VA -
Virginia's Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made five saves in the first half to help the Cavaliers go into the half with a 0-0 tie, and in the second half the Virginia offense came alive, scoring four goals to defeat the Appalachian State Mountaineers 4-0. Virginia forced seven corners in the second half, and the Cavaliers converted on two of them, including the eventual game-winner six minutes into the second half, to improve to 7-3 on the season.
White made a number of point-blank saves in the first half as the Mountaineers put five shots on cage, but White turned them all away. On the other end, Mountaineer Malia Swieconek kept the Cavaliers out of the cage as well, stopping six of the Hoos' eight shots in the first half.
Six minutes into the second half, Virginia's Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) forced a corner at the top of the circle. Mason White (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) inserted the ball, and Goodloe stopped it. Katie Jo Gerfen's (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) shot was tipped into the boards by Rosemary Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) 6:13 into the game, putting the Cavaliers up 1-0.
The Mountaineers quickly built an attack and a crossing pass into the circle was tipped up just in front of the goal by Nara Brookes, but White was there to make the save and keep Virginia up 1-0. The Cavaliers countered and forced a corner at their offensive end. This time Gerfen's shot came back out to her, and she lifted her shot to the top of the cage. The Appalachian State keeper batted the ball away, giving the Hoos a penalty stroke. Goodloe's stroke went to the sideboards on the keeper's right, putting Virginia up 2-0 11:28 into the second half.
Just three minutes later Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) drove to the baseline and along the endline where she forced another Virginia corner. Cara Unterkofler (Centreville, Va./Centreville) pushed out and Goodloe flipped the ball to McManus, whose shot was tipped into the cage by the post player for Appalachian State, putting the Cavaliers up 3-0 with 20:46 to play in the half.
Virginia's
Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) started the next goal series as she controlled a loose ball and sent it to midfield to Goodloe, who in turn sent a long ball for Slocum to run onto. Slocum took the pass and dribbled to the top of the circle where she rocketed a shot to the boards with 17:04 to play in the game, giving the Cavaliers a 4-0 edge.
Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) came into the game with 12:21 remaining in the half, marking her first collegiate action. She had one punch clear as a Mountaineer pass came across the circle, preserving the shutout for Virginia.
The Cavalier continue their homestand on Sunday as they take on #10 Ohio State at 2:00 at University Hall Turf Field.
