The Virginia field hockey team shut out Radford tonight (Oct 5) 2-0, holding the Highlanders to two shots, both of which came off short corners. On the other side of the ball, Katie Phillips assisted Mia Link on the first goal and then scored the insurance marker, giving her 35 for her career and moving her into a tie for the #10 spot all-time in Cavalier hockey history. Virginia (7-5) recorded their fourth shutout of the 2005 campaign, not allowing Radford (5-7) any shots in the first half of play.

The Cavaliers forced the play early, drawing three corners in the first ten minutes of the game, but they were not able to get on the boards until Phillips intercepted a 16-yard hit and attacked the circle. She laid the ball up to Link, who pulled around the keeper and shot the ball into an empty net at 14:15, putting the Cavaliers up 1-0.

Eight minutes later Link took the ball away on the right side of the pitch and moved forward, laying the ball upfield to Abby Taylor. Taylor attacked the endline and sent a crossing pass to the middle of the circle where Phillips swept the ball into the cage at 22:12, giving Virginia a 2-0 lead that the Cavaliers took into the break. Virginia outshot the Highlanders 9-0 in the first frame.

Radford avoided giving up a third goal as Natalie Bowen made a save on the endline in the second half.

Phillips' 35th career goal ties her with Elaine Maddox (1983-86). She is also tied with T. J. Whitehurst who scored 11 goals as a fourth year in 1988, which ranks tenth all-time.

The Cavaliers continue their homestand with a game against Penn on Saturday, Oct. 8. Game time against the Quakers is 1:00 pm.
