The University of Virginia stormed back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth 2-1 tonight in Charlottesville. After a scoreless first half, the Rams scored in the 40th minute as Jacqui Martin blasted in a shot from the top of the circle. Eleven minutes later the Cavaliers executed a breakaway that started with Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) and was finished as Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) sent the ball across the cage to Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central), who sent the ball to the nets and tied the game. With time running down in regulation, Rosemary Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) collected a loose ball at the top of the circle and shot. The ball glanced off the VCU keeper's pads and into the cage for what would prove to be the game-winner. Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made six saves in the game, including five in the first half to keep the Rams at bay in the first stanza.

The Rams drew the first corner in the game and outcornered the Cavaliers 4-2 in the first 35 minutes. Virginia's second short corner came at the end of the first period and the Hoos had a chance to put a goal on the board with no time on the clock, but they were unable to convert and the teams went to the break tied 0-0.

In the second half the Rams got on the board first as Martin gained control of the ball at the top right of the circle and put a ball into the boards on the far side at the 40:34 mark of the game.

Eleven minutes later Slocum tackled the ball away on the sideline and sent a ball in to Sara York (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) who took the ball into the 25. She in turn sent the ball up to Nicholson, who took the ball into the circle and drew the keeper out to the right of the cage. Nicholson slotted the ball over to Flynn who was wide open on the far side of the cage, and Flynn scored her fourth goal in three games, tying the game at the 51:21 mark of the contest.

With less than two minutes to play Slocum again brought the ball upfield and the Cavalier offense had a couple of chances before the ball popped out to Walker at the top of the circle. Walker's blast went off the glove of the keeper and into the cage for the 2-1 lead.

Virginia hosts North Carolina on Sunday, October 13 at 1:00 pm.
