The Cavaliers were able to force a corner as time was winding down in the first half and on the play, fourth-year captain Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) took a feed from Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and got the Hoos on the board. It was not enough, however, as the Heels added a goal in the second half and defeated Virginia (9-4, 1-1 ACC) 4-1today. Virginia both outshot (9-7) and outcornered (11-3) the Tar Heels.
UNC got on the board first as Abby Martin converted a corner just 2:30 into the contest. She struck again on the same play 20 minutes later to up the margin to 2-0. Both Meredith Keller and Abbey Woolley were credited with assists on both goals. Carolina's Abbey Woolley gave UNC a three-goal margin with a scramble in front of the cage five minutes later.
With less than 30 seconds to play in the half, Virginia forced a corner. Gerfen slotted the ball over to Goodloe, who popped it into the boards with 9.5 seconds remaining in the half to cut the margin to 3-1.
Halfway through the second period, the Tar Heels were awarded their only corner of the half. Martin's shot was tipped into the cage by Kerry Falgowski, giving the Heels another three-goal margin.
Virginia completes its current homestand with a game against Radford on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 pm.
