Charlottesville, Va. -- James Madison scored three goals in the second
half, including two in a span of 56 seconds, to defeat the Cavaliers 3-2
tonight. The Dukes battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to steal the
win from the Cavaliers.
Virginia got on the board first with a corner goal by Meredith
Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) at the 19:45 mark of the period. She
was assisted on the play by Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore
Regional). Coleman scored the second goal on a corner with 4:41 left in the
half off assists from Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and
Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy). Becky Worthington
(Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) made three saves in the first half as the
Cavaliers extended their shutout streak to six consecutive halves.
In the second half the Dukes stormed back. Julie Martinez tipped in
a corner shot by Katrina Hunter at 16:05 to bring the Dukes within one.
Martinez tied the game with 7:30 left as she tipped a ball over
Worthtington on a breakaway. Just 56 seconds later Hunter notched the
eventual game-winner as she connected on a corner with assists from Sara
Perilla and Liz Sanders.
The Cavaliers continue their homestand with a game against #4 UNC
on Sunday, Oct. 17. Game time against the Tar Heels is 1:00 pm.
