Final Stats
The Virginia field hockey team scored a goal against the nation's stingiest defense, but the #3 Tar Heels scored three times on short corners to take the game 3-1. UNC came into the contest with a national-best .62 scoring defense, but Virginia's Lindsay O'Bannon scored at 38:57 to pull the Hoos within one at 2-1 before UNC (12-3) scored a third short corner goal. Virginia (8-6) out-shot the Tar Heels 4-3 in the second half of play.
The Tar Heels got on the board in the fourth minute of play as Heather Kendell tipped in a Naomi Weatherald short corner strike to put UNC up 1-0 at 3:56. Twenty minutes later the Tar Heels drew another corner, and on the play Weatherald took the stop of Xan Funk off the injection by Heather Kendell to the boards, giving UNC a 2-0 lead at 23:42. The Heels led 2-0 at halftime.
In second half, the Tar Heels drew a corner after Virginia was assessed a yellow card at 38:26. The Heels failed to convert, and Virginia had a 16-yard hit that was taken quickly by Erin Hayes, who passed the ball to Katie Phillips. Phillips advanced the ball a couple steps before laying the ball up to Sarah Miller. Miller in turn laid the ball up to O'Bannon, who pulled right and scored at 38:57. O'Bannon's goal made the Cavaliers just the fifth team this year to score on the Tar Heels.
UNC notched an insurance goal minutes later as the Heels converted the rebound on a short corner as Kendell lifted the ball to the cage at 43:42.
Virginia returns to action on Wednesday as the Cavaliers take on a second-consecutive top-five opponent in #5 American. Game time against the Eagles is 1:00.
