Box Score
The Virginia defensive unit held the nation's third-ranked scoring offense in check for the majority of the game, allowing the #5 American Eagles (14-0) only one goal in regulation, three below their average on the year. Biffy Cornelison, Dana Anderson, Amy Marotta and Erin Hayes contained the Eagles while also starting the sequence that led to the Virginia goal three minutes after American scored. Virginia's Katherine Blair was brilliant in the cage, making four saves while also contributing a number of clears to keep the Eagles out of the circle and Virginia (8-7) out of danger.
The two squads went back and forth throughout the entire contest, and after the first 35 minutes, the teams remained deadlocked at 0-0. The Eagles finally broke through as they executed a variation on a short corner to the left as Javiera Villagra scored off a pass from Camila Infante to put AU up 1-0 at 63:50.
Virginia answered right back, as they had been doing all game. Erin Hayes rocketed a lead pass through the middle and Mia Link ran onto the ball, taking it into the circle. There, Link and O'Bannon scrapped with the AU defenders in the D, and Link was able to get a touch on the ball and send it across the endline into the cage, tying the game at 67:16, a scant 3:26 after the Eagles scored. Virginia held strong, including a point blank shot taken by American that Blair easily deflected out of harm's way to preserve the tie. In the extra session, AU's Maggie Hall attacked from the deep left corner and scored to win the game for the Eagles.
Virginia's Katie Phillips and Allison Flynn were able to limit the nation's third-ranked scorer in Camila Infante to no points from the field while helping generate dangerous counter-attacks for the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday as they take on top-ranked Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, NC. Game time on the 22nd is 1:00 pm.
