WINSTON-SALEM, N. C. --The Cavaliers' Jessica Coleman (Oceanport,
N. J./Shore Regional) scored a career-high four goals today as the Virginia
field hockey team defeated Appalachian State today 10-0 in a game held at
Wake Forest. Coleman becomes only the eighth person in school history to
notch four goals in a game. The Virginia defense also recorded its sixth
shutout of the season by not allowing the Mountaineers a shot or a corner
on the day. The ten goals is the most for the Cavaliers since they defeated
Davidson 11-0 to open 1997.
Lorraine Vizzuso's (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) inteception and
ensuing goal at 25:36 of the first period provided the Cavaliers with the
only margin they would need. But the offense erupted for two more goals in
the next five minutes to take a 3-0 lead 15 minutes into the half. Coleman
scored her first goal on a penalty stroke at 23:00 and then assisted
Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) at 20:56. Elwell's goal gives
her 154 career points, which places her in a tie for fourth all-time at
Virginia in scoring and a tie for tenth all-time in scoring in the Atlantic
Coast Conference.
Coleman closed out the scoring with a goal off a penalty
corner at the 15:24 mark of the first period. She was assisted on the play
by Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and Carrie Goodloe
(St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs). Lindsay's assist was the 40th of her
career, making her only the second person in school history to record 40
assists in a career. She is also only the 11th person in conference history
to have 40 assists in a career.
Goodloe opened the scoring in the second half as she slapped in a
loose ball just 1:37 into the stanza. Four minutes later she assisted
Coleman again on a corner play along with Lindsay. Four minutes later two
first-years hooked up as Rosie Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) notched
her first career assist with a feed to Katie Slocum (Carlisle Area,
Pa./Carlisle) at 25:35.
Ten minutes later Goodloe notched her third assist of the afternoon
with a feed to Coleman at 15:11. Coleman's goal, her fourth of the
afternoon marks only the ninth time in school history that an individual
has scored four or more goals in a game. She now has 19 goals on the
season, which is the second-highest total in school history for a
sophomore. Her 48 points is also the second-highest total for a sophomore
and ranks seventh all-time for a single season. Goodloe's 16 assists this
season ranks second all-time as a second-year and moves her into 10th
all-time at Virginia with 21 career assists. It is also the seventh-highest
total for a season.
Natalie Crane (San Diego, Calif./Serra) scored the Cavaliers' ninth
goal on a rebound with just over seven minutes to play, and Lindsay closed
out the scoring with a goal with just 43 seconds to go in the game.
Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) played the
whole 70 minutes and recorded her sixth shutout of the season and the
eighth of her career.
Virginia concludes the regular season with a game against Duke on
Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1:00 pm.
