Box Score

Virginia's Lindsey Selfridge (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) netted her first career goal and tied the game three minutes after Wake Forest (14-1) had taken the early lead, but the Demon Deacons scored the final four goals of the game to defeat Virginia 5-1 today in Winston-Salem. Virginia (9-8) was led defensively by Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walshingham Academy), who had eight saves in the game.

Wake Forest got on the scoreboard early as Kelly Dostal scored on a short corner, taking a pass from Maeke Boreel at the top left of the circle and sending it to the boards 13:18 into the contest, putting the Demon Deacons on top 1-0.

Virginia answered as Shannon LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) controlled a loose ball in the backfield and sent it to the middle of the field to Sarah Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Miller laid the ball upfield to Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown), who in turn brought the ball into the circle. Link passed the ball off to Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown), who laid it off to Selfridge, who was at the post and scored, tying the game at 1-1 with 18:51 to play in the half.

The Demon Deacons went ahead 2-1 68 seconds before halftime as Lauren Crandall sent a pass into the circle where Dostal batted it into the cage, giving Wake a lead it would not relinquish.

Wake scored twice in the opening five minutes of the second half as Dostal took a pass from Kelly Wood to the cage, and 43 seconds later Boreel scored from the top of the circle, giving the Deacs a 4-1 advantage. Boreel added a second goal with eight minutes to play for the final score of 5-1.

Virginia returns home for the final two games of the regular season, taking on Boston College and #2 Duke on Halloween weekend. The Cavaliers face the Eagles at 5:00 on Friday, Oct 31 and the Blue Devils at 2:00 on Sunday, Nov. 2.
