For the third consecutive game, Virginia and Duke (9-8) needed extra time to settle the outcome, and once again the Cavaliers prevailed, defeating the Blue Devils 2-1. After the game the team honred the three fourth-years, Mason White (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and Jessie Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) with a special ceremony. Virginia's Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) was solid in the cage, stopping five Duke shots and allowing just one goal in over 82 minutes of play. Fourth-year captain Goodloe notched a point on both goals, as she scored the opener and then assisted on the game-winner as she intercepted a Duke pass and sent the ball up to Coleman , who converted the pass to help Virginia improve to 12-6 overall.

The Cavaliers got on the board first as Shannon LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) collected a Duke 16-yard hit at the 25 and sent the ball to Goodloe at the top of the circle. Goodloe took the ball into the D and fired a shot that ricocheted off the Duke keeper's pads into the cage, putting the Cavaliers up 1-0 with 16:25 to play in the first half. Duke out shot (5-3) and outcornered (5-1) the Cavaliers in the opening stanza, but White made three saves to help Virginia maintain the 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Cavaliers had the advantage in shots (5-3) and in corners (5-4) but it was the Blue Devils who got on the board as Angie North took a Virginia mishit out of the back into the circle and shot reverse stick into the short side of the cage for the equalizer with 12:57 to play.

With just over three minutes to play, Coleman gained possession of a loose ball and took it into the upper left corner and sent it across to a streaking Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) who took it into the circle. Beach got the keeper to drop as she pulled around her, and got off a shot, but the shot hit the far post and rebounded back into play. The teams went into the extra session tied at 1-1.

In overtime, the Blue Devils got the only corner but the give-and-go play was nullified with a high shot, giving possession back to the Cavaliers. Duke had possession on a 16-yard hit, and on the transfer, Goodloe intercepted the pass and brought it upfield before dishing it to Coleman. Coleman fired a shot that hit the keeper and continued into the cage, sending the Cavaliers to the win.

The Cavaliers (2-2 ACC) are the fourth seed in the upcoming ACC tournament and will face Duke (0-4 ACC) on Thursday, Nov 1 at 4:00. The game will take place at UNC.
