Down a goal with just over 12 minutes to play, the Cavalier defense (14-7) stiffened and did not allow a shot or a corner the remainder of the game. On the other side of the ball, the Hoos forced a corner and captain Mason White (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) stuck back a rebound that popped out to her, tying the game with just under nine minutes to play. In the extra session, the Cavaliers converted their third corner as Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) stuck back her own rebound, sending the Hoos to the quarterfinals.
In the first half, both teams took four shots while the Buckeyes outcornered the Hoos 5-3. Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) stood strong for Virginia, making three saves and keeping the Buckeyes out of the cage.
The Cavaliers outshot the Buckeyes 3-1 early in the second half, but it was the Buckeyes who got on the board first as Stacey Todd took the ball deep into the circle and got off a shot with just over 12 minutes to play. Three minutes later Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) took the ball down low and got the ball to Coleman at the top of the circle, who forced a corner. Katie Jo Gerfen's (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) shot was saved but it popped out to Mason White, who sent the ball into the net, tying the game.
In the overtime period, the Cavaliers got a pair of corners early and took four shots, but the Buckeyes keeper was up to each one of them, denying the Cavaliers the boards. Ohio State was able to force a corner, but Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) brought the ball out the circle, denying the Buckeyes the goal. Virginia in turn forced a corner, and Coleman's shot came back out to her, and she deposited it to the boards, giving the Cavaliers the win.
Virginia advances to the NCAA quarterfinals to play Wake Forest tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 11.
