Katie Jo Gerfen's (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) goal off a penalty corner tied the game for the Cavaliers halfway through the second period, and the Hoos had a corner as time expired in the game, but they were unable to convert and fell to the Huskies 2-1 today in NCAA first round action.

After a scoreless first half, the Huskies got on the board first as Kelly Cochrane one-timed an Amy Herz pass at the top of the circle into the cage with 26:45 to play in the second half. Gerfen tied the game with 14:58 to play after the Hoos forced five consecutive corners.

But the Huskies were able to force five corners of their own in the waning minutes, and after a series of spectacular saves by Virginia keeper Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton), Amy Marland finally snuck one into the cage with just 1:10 to play for the eventual game-winner. Worthington ended the game with 8 saves.

The Cavaliers conclude the 2000 campaign with a 14-8 record, while Connecticut advances to play Old Dominion tomorrow. The Monarchs defeated Stanford 6-1 in other first-round action.
