College Park, Md. - Old Dominion's Marina DiGiacomo scored a pair of goals today to help the Lady Monarchs defeat the Cavaliers 3-0 in College Park in the first round of the 1999 NCAA Championships. This marks the third consecutive year that the Monarchs have defeated the Cavaliers in the NCAA tournament.

ODU's Adrienne Yoder scored on a backdoor penalty corner to give the Monarchs all the offense they would need just 3:26 into the contest. DiGiacomo made it 2-0 as she converted a penalty stroke to the lower right corner eight minutes later. The Monarchs led at halftime 2-0.

The Cavaliers had hope, though, as their earlier contest this season saw the Monarchs take a 2-0 lead at halftime. In that second half, Virginia scored a pair of goals to send the game into overtime but fell in the extra session 3-2.

In today's game, DiGiacomo scored halfway through the period on a corner goal to increase the lead to 3-0. It was to be all of the scoring for the remainder of the game.

With the loss the Cavaliers conclude the 1999 campaign at 13-8. Virginia's Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) tied the record for assists as a second year with 19 on the season and has moved into the top-10 all-time at Virginia with 24. Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) notched her 44th career assist this season and stands second all-time at Virginia and seventh all-time in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) finishes her career ranked tenth in the ACC in scoring with 65 goals and 27 assists and she also ranks fourth all-time at Virginia. Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N. J./Shore Regional) led the Cavaliers in scoring this season with 54 points, which ranks second all-time as a second year and is fourth all-time for a single season at UVA.
