CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia field hockey head coach Michele Madison has announced the hiring of Shawn Hindy as an assistant coach.

Hindy, a former US National Field Hockey team member and a former US National Indoor Field Hockey team member, comes to Charlottesville after working the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan State.

"I am extremely excited to welcome Shawn Hindy to the Virginia staff," Madison said. "Shawn brings an vast array of coaching and playing experiences to field. He was a tough competitor as a player and will thrive on the competitiveness in the ACC, which is the premier conference in America. He will manage the defensive unit and provide overall technical development. He has coached at the high school, club, DI, and national level, which I think truly demonstrates his dedication and broad perspective on the sport."

Hindy was a three-time USFHA Field Hockey Player of the Year while playing for the United States Men's National Field Hockey Team from 1995-2007. He served as captain from 2001-04 and has played in more than 60 international matches for the United States including participating in the 1999 Pan American Games and the 2000 Americas Cup. From 2002-12, he was a member of the United State's Men's National Indoor Field Hockey Team, playing in the 2003 World Cup in Germany and the 2011 World Cup in Poland.

From 2007-2010, Hindy was the head coach of the United States Women's Indoor National Field Hockey Team. In November of 2008, he led his squad to a Silver Medal at the Pan-American Cup Indoor Tournament in Argentina. Hindy was an assistant coach at Michigan State for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He previously served as an assistant field hockey coach at Radford University from 2004-06 while also working towards receiving his MBA.

 

 

Prior to his time at MSU, Hindy coached at Lehighton High School, serving as the head field hockey coach as well as the athletic director for the Pennsylvania school from 2006-10. He led the LHS field hockey team to a State Championship title in 2009, which was the first State Championship of any sport in the history of the school. He won four district championships, four league championships and advanced to the state playoffs all five years as a head coach. Hindy compiled a 110-12-1 record in his coaching tenure, including a perfect 26-0 in 2009. In four years, the coach sent 25 players to play NCAA field hockey around the nation. In 2010, Hindy was named the NFHCA Mideast (Pennsylvania) Coach of the Year.

Hindy is a member of the USAFH Board of Directors, serving on the USA Field Hockey Advancement Committee and also being named an alternate for the USOC Athlete Advisory Council.

He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Financial Services with a minor in Spanish from San Diego State University in May of 2004.
