WINNIPEG, Canada - Cavalier All-American Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) and the rest of the USA field hockey team fought a tough match against favored Canada in Winnipeg today and came off the field with a 1-0 victory. Kris Fillat's goal in the 49th minute of play broke a scoreless tie and the USA defense held on for the win, giving the Americans a 2-0 mark in pool play. Canada, one of the medal favorites, fell to 1-2 in the tournament.

Only the gold medal winner gets an automatic bid to the Sydney Olympics in 2000. With the win, the USA should finish in the top two and be in contention for the gold in the final day of competition. The Stars and Stripes will face the heavily favored Argentine team, the defending champions, on Thursday, July 29.
