CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team (1-0) closes out its opening weekend by taking on No. 8 Penn State (1-0) on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 12 p.m. in State College, Pennsylvania, the first of three-straight games for the Cavaliers against ranked opponents.
Both Virginia and Penn State are coming off opening day victories. Virginia opened the 2014 campaign with a dominant 9-0 victory at William & Mary. Six different Cavaliers scored goals in the contest including freshman Emilie van Zinnicq Bergmann (Dordrecht, The Netherlands), who scored a pair in her collegiate debut. Preseason All-ACC honoree Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) had four assists in her first college game. The Cavaliers outshot the Tribe, 25-1, including a 14-0 shot-differential in the first half.
The Nittany Lions downed No. 9 Old Dominion, 2-1, in Friday's home opener. Senior Jenna Chrismer posted two goals, while senior goalkeeper Kylie Licata made a career-high nine stops.
Penn State is 15-6 all-time against Virginia. The Nittany Lions suffered a 4-2 loss to the Cavaliers on the road last season, but had won the previous two matchups (2011, 2012).
Penn State brings back six starters and three of its top six scorers from a season ago. The squad returns two 2013 Big Ten first team members in Laura Gebhart and Kylie Licata, while Taylor Herold, who garnered second team honors, also returns. Herold led Penn State with 30 points (13 goals, four assists) last year. Gebhart was a 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I second team All-American.
The Cavaliers will play their third-straight road contest on Thursday, Sept. 4 when they face No. 20 Iowa in Iowa City, before returning to Charlottesville for their Sunday, Sept. 7 home opener against No. 7 Princeton at 11:30 a.m. The Princeton game is one of four contests during the regular season that will be streamed online as part of the Cavaliers Live subscription package through VirginiaSports.com.
