After playing the Wolverines to a 0-0 tie at halftime, the Cavaliers (0-1) surrended two goals in the second half and fell to Michigan 2-0 today in Ann Arbor. Virginia had the early advantage, outshooting and outcornering the Wolverines by a 4-2 margin in both catagories.

In the first minute of play of the second half Virginia's Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md./Betheda-Chevy Chase) was called for a back tackle and was assessed a five-minute penalty. The Cavaliers withstood the Michigan charge while playing short handed. Five minutes later the Wolverines had a free hit from outside the circle and Catherine Foreman sent the ball to the far post where Molly Powers tipped in into the cage for a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later a Michigan shot off a corner was stopped by a Virginia body, resulting in a stroke for the Wolverines. Stephanie Johnson converted the stroke to the left of the keeper and the Wolverines took a 2-0 lead with 11:47 to play.

After Mason White (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) sent a crossing pass that was bobbled by the Michigan keeper, Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) lifted a shot to the cage but it was batted out of the air on the line by Michigan's Johnson, preserving the shutout.

The loss breaks a five-game winning streak on Fridays for the Cavaliers and is the first loss in the month of August for Virginia in the history of the program. Virginia will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 2) as the Cavaliers face Central Michigan (1-1) at 12:00 at Michigan.
