CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 10 Virginia field hockey team (2-1, 0-0 ACC) closes out the weekend by hosting Monmouth (2-1, 0-0 MAAC) on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. at University Hall Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.
Columbia will be taking on William & Mary in a neutral site game at Turf Field at 11 a.m. on Sunday, playing before the UVA/Monmouth contest. Fans are invited to come early and check out that game as well. Admission is free for all of Virginia's regular-season home field hockey games and Sunday morning's neutral-site contest.
The Cavaliers, who came into the weekend tied with Rutgers for first in the nation in scoring by averaging 6.5 goals per game, scored nine goals in Friday night's shut out victory over Columbia. Senior midfielder Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.), who leads the nation in total points (21) and points per game (7.0), scored her second hat trick of the season against the Lions while also assisting on three goals. Sophomore striker Erin Shanahan (Pasadena, Md.) scored two goals and had an assist. Freshman forward Makayla Gallen (Glen Mills, Pa.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career and also contributed an assist.
The Hawks picked up a pair of victories in their opening weekend, defeating Bucknell, 6-2, and Kent State, 5-1, but fell 2-1 at William & Mary on Friday night. Forward Kelly Hanna and defender Julie Laszlo were named the season's first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Field Hockey Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. In the opening game of the year at Bucknell, Hanna registered her first career hat trick in her second career multi-goal game to help lead the Blue and White to a commanding 6-2 victory. Laszlo, the league's reigning Player and Defensive Player of the Year, had a hand on both ends of the field in Monmouth's victories. The senior helped control the backfield which only surrender three goals in 140 minutes, while assisting on three of the Hawks' 11 goals over the weekend.
The Cavaliers finish off their season-opening homestand next weekend when they host No. 2 Duke (2-0, 0-0 ACC) on Friday, Sept. 8 at 5 p.m.
