Virginia started the week with a 2-1 victory over Liberty on Monday. Junior Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and senior Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) scored the Cavalier goals. Vittese has scored a goal in each of the last two games and, with six points this season, is currently nine points shy of moving into the UVA career top-10 list.
Senior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) added her team-leading fourth assist of the year against Liberty. Senior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) has a team-high eight points on four goals this season.
Princeton, which has won the Ivy League title in 11 of the last 12 years, started the season ranked No. 15, but moved into the top-10 after taking down a pair of ranked teams last weekend, topping then-No. 12 Albany, 3-2, last Friday and then-No. 10 Delaware, 4-2, on Sunday. The Tigers trailed by a goal in both games before coming back to win. Sophia Tornetta was named this week's Longstreth/NFCHA's Division I Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts in those games.
Virginia leads the all-time series against the Tigers, 6-5, including having a 5-2 mark in Charlottesville. Last year, UVA posted a come-from-behind 4-3 victory on the road with Foust tying the game with 50 seconds remaining and Greta Ell (Plains, Pa.) scoring the game-winner in overtime. Princeton's signature victory over Virginia was a 5-2 decision at Turf Field in the 2012 NCAA Quarterfinals. The Tigers would go on to win the NCAA Championship that season.
Virginia closes out its three-game week by hosting No. 5 UConn on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
