Second-year Shelly Edmonds and the 10th-ranked Virginia field hockey team are off to a 10-2 start and are unbeaten at home. The Emmaus, Pa., native is one of several important pieces of the Cavalier defensive corps. She recently caught up with VirginiaSports.com to talk about the team’s recent road trip, preparing to take on the No. 1-ranked team in the country and the aspects of  playing defense. Virginia continues ACC play at 11 a.m. Saturday on the Turf Field against the top-ranked Terrapins of Maryland.

Question: Aside from the games, what was your favorite part about the team’s recent trip to Boston for a pair of matches?
Edmonds:
The shopping and the food. I went and listened to some jazz with my uncle and that was pretty cool.

Question: How was the team able to rebound after such a tough loss to Boston University?
Edmonds:
We just had to learn from what we did wrong. It was a really tough loss but we just learn from our mistakes and build on that. We can’t let it happen again.

Question: How do you prepare for No. 1 Maryland?
Edmonds:
I think it’s been in the back of our minds for awhile but we couldn’t really think about it until after the Richmond game. This was a good game to have before Maryland because it let us work on our skills a little better. We are going to have to do everything right.

Question: How would you describe your role as a defensive leader on the team?
Edmonds:
I don’t really feel like there is one leader. We all work together as a unit. The biggest thing for us to get right and do well is communication.

Question: What are the best and worst things about playing in the back?
Edmonds:
Worst is when the other team scores. Best is when you stop a goal or when someone is breaking out through the middle of the field and you just shut them down completely. It is the biggest rush.

Question: How would you describe the team chemistry this season?
Edmonds:
The team chemistry has definitely grown. It has gotten so much better. Last year it was good. This year everyone just gets along so well and we are all really good friends. The new girls just mesh really well. It worked out really easily.

Question: What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?
Edmonds:
Hang out with friends and watch TV. I like to read a lot.

Question: Why did you choose to come to school at UVa?
Edmonds:
There were a combination of things. It is a great school. I liked Michele Madison as a coach. I like the south and the warmer weather.

Question: What is your major?
Edmonds:
I haven’t officially decided yet but I am leaning towards history or media studies.

Question: What has been your favorite class?
Edmonds:
Either African American studies or media studies. I took (media studies) 201 and it was really fun.

Question: What is your favorite spot on Grounds?
Edmonds:
This is so weird, I was just thinking about that. It’s the Lawn, but really early in the morning. It’s really pretty.
