Virginia comes into the game having won five of its last six games including a 3-2 victory at William & Mary on Tuesday evening. UVA remained at No. 10 in this week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll while Syracuse moved up from No. 4 to No. 2 after defeating Duke 5-1in a top-five match-up last week.
Junior Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) added three points to her team-leading total by scoring a goal and contributing an assist in the victory at William & Mary. Vittese, who has 22 points this season, has scored a goal and contributed an assist in each of the last four games. Vittese currently ranks 10th on the UVA career points list with 112 and 10th in career assists with 30. Vittese is one goal shy of tying Cheryl Gleason (1981-84) for 10th place on the career goals list at 42.
Senior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored her sixth goal of the year at William & Mary. Tata also has 41 career goals and is one shy of tying for 10th place in the UVA career rankings.
Sophomore goalkeeper Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) improved to 7-3 in the win over the Tribe. Lucas leads the ACC with a 6.20 saves-per-game average and is 12th in the NCAA with a .756 save percentage.
Syracuse’s Emma Lamison and Roos Weers are the reigning NFHCA National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Lamison played a role in six of the Orange’s 10 goals last weekend with two goals and three assists. Weers scored two goals in both the win over Duke and the 5-0 victory over Cornell.
The Orange are ranked sixth in the country in scoring, averaging 3.88 goals per game and are fourth in scoring margin at +2.69.
The all-time series between the two schools is tied 2-2. Syracuse won both meetings last year including a 3-1 game at Syracuse and a 3-2 overtime victory in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. In 2014, the No. 10 Cavaliers upset No. 3 Syracuse, 3-1, in Charlottesville.
