Dec. 4, 2000
Four University of Virginia Cavaliers were named to the VaSID (Virginia Sports Information Directors) All-State team today. This is the first year that this organization has sponsored an All-State field hockey team. Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton), Julia Richardson, (Atlanta, Ga./Stone Ridge (Md.)), Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs), and Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, Va./West Essex) were all named to the state team.
Worthington, a first-team All-South Region selection in 2000, started 21 games for the Cavaliers this season. She had a goals-against average of 1.72, posting four shutouts and a save % of 78.0%. Worthington is a three-time All-ACC Tournament selection (97, 99, 00) and a two-time All-South Region selection (99, 2nd team, 00, 1st team). She ranks sixth all-time at UVA with 311 saves. Her career goals-against average of 1.44 ranks 17th all-time in the Commonwealth and 7th all-time at Virginia. She was selected to the NFHCA North/South All-Star game for 2000. In the 2000 ACC Tournament semifinals Becky stopped an overtime stroke to preserve the tie in the game against top-seeded and second-ranked North Carolina, and in the ensuing strokeoff stopped four of Carolina's nine strokes to help Virginia to the upset win. She was the last line of defense for a young defense and was called upon time and time again to hold the Cavalier defense.
Richardson is a repeat selection to the South Regional squads, having been named to the second team in 1999. A captain in 2000, Richardson led the Hoos with six defensive saves this season. She marshalled a young defense that ranked nationally in scoring defense. Her nine assists from the backfield ranked second on the team.
Goodloe led the team with 15 assists this season, the second consecutive year that she led in that catagory. A first-team All-South Region selection in 2000, her 39 career assists ranks third at Virginia. She also has two seasons that rank in the top-10 all-time at Virginia in assists in a season (19, 1999, 15, 2000). She ranked nationally in assists (14th) and assists per game (15th) all season.
Vizzuso was selected to the All-South Region first team for her second consecutive year and is a four-time All-South selection who ranked third on the team in scoring in 2000 with 9 goals and 4 assists. She ranks seventh all-time in scoring at Virginia with 38 goals and 20 assists. Her 38 goals ranks seventh all-time at UVA as well. Her nine career game-winning goals ranks 11th all-time at Virginia.
