The 13th-ranked Virginia women's golf team stands in eight place after the first round of play at the Papa John's Collegiate Championship held at Don Shula's Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla.
Leah Wigger posted the Cavaliers' best score with a 1-over 73. She trails South Florida's Christina Jones and Amanda Mathis of Mississippi State by one stroke for the individual lead.
Virginia shot 19-over 307 in its first event of the spring and is eight shots behind tournament-leading College of Charleston.
Freshman Jennie Arseneault, playing in her first collegiate tournament, shot 4-over 76 to stand 18th overall. Lauren Mielbrecht and Rachel Smith both carded 79s to tie for 39th. Carly Truitt is 57th at 83. Sally Shonk, playing as an individual, shot 75 and is 11th in stroke play.
The second round of the tournament will take Monday following by the final 18 holes Tuesday.
