The Virginia women's team golf finished the first day of the prestigious Bryan National Collegiate in 17th place, after shooting a 320 (+32).
Three-time defending champion Duke is leading the tournament after carding a 289 (+1) in the cold, windy first round. Auburn and Purdue are tied for second at 294 (+6). Vanderbilt and Florida shot 295 (+7) to tie for fourth.
Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn and Purdue's Beth Hermes are tied for the individual lead, after each shot a first-round 70 (-2). Four players tied for third with 71's (-1).
Freshman Sally Shonk (Nobelsville, Ind.) paced Virginia with a 79 (+7) to tie for 54th. Freshman Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) tied for 66th at 80 (+8). Freshman Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) shot an 81 (+9) to tie for 76th. Freshman Ashley Mayo (Aventura, Fla.) rounded out the scoring with an 82 (+10) and a tie for 81st.
The second round will begin tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. on the par 72 Bryan Park Champions Course.
