Baton Rouge, LA - The Virginia women's golf team finished the first round of the NCAA East Regional in 15th place with a team score of 7-over 295. The Cavaliers are seeded 10th in the 21-team field. The top eight teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships.

Virginia was led on the first day by a 1-under 71 by senior Leah Wigger. Starting on the 10th hole, Wigger finished her first nine holes at 2-over and then ripped off four birdies on the first six holes of the front nine to move to 2-under. A bogey on her last hold dropped her back to 1-under which put her in 16th place.

Fellow senior Rachel Smith shot even-par 72 and is in 25th place. Carly Truitt and Sally Shonk both shot 4-over 76 and are tied for 72nd. Freshman Whitney Neuhauser carded an 82 and is in 101st place.

UCLA grabbed the early lead by shooting 7-under 281. Wake Forest and Furman are tied for second at 284. The Cavaliers are five shots behind South Carolina and North Carolina, which are tied for eighth-place at 2-over 290.

A trio of players managed to shoot 6-under 66 to share the first round individual lead. That group includes Wake Forest's Nannette Hill, Sydnee Michaels of UCLA and Adrienne White of Louisville.

The Cavaliers, playing with LSU and Florida State, will start their second round Friday at 12:30 from the first tee. Live scoring of the regional is on-line at Golfstat.com
