CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The University of Virginia women's golf team opened its inaugural season with a 302-329 win over Richmond on Sunday at Birdwood Golf Course.
The first ever competition in women's golf at the University of Virginia can be considered a success. With such a young team, head coach Jan Mann wasn't quite sure what to expect, but she got a solid performance from her players. "Overall, I was very impressed," Mann said. "For their level of experience, I thought they did a great job of keeping their composure. Birdwood is a tough course, and they handled it exceptionally well. It's always nice to start a season and a program with a victory."
The Cavaliers were led by freshman Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.), who shot a 74 (+2) to take top honors in the match. Freshman Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) and freshman Sally Shonk (Nobelsville, Ind.) finished tied for second, each shooting 75 (+3). Freshman Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) chipped in with a 78 (+6), and freshman Kira Mayo (Aventura, Fla.) shot an 87 (+15). Playing as individuals, freshman Ashley Mayo (Aventura, Fla) carded an 85 (+13), and senior Michele Graham (Chesapeake, Va.) shot an 89 (+17).
The Cavaliers travel to Charleston, S.C. on Sept 15-16 to compete in their first tournament at the Cougar Fall Classic.
