The 12th-ranked Virginia women's golf team is off to a solid start in its first fall tournament of the season. The Cavaliers shot 2-under 286 to stand in a three-way tie for second place after the opening round of the 24-team Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. USC leads the field at 3-under 285. Duke and Florida share second place with UVa.
Virginia was led by junior Portland Rosen who shot 3-under 69. She is tied for third place overall. Sophomore Briana Mao is 13th at 71 while senior Brittany Altomare and junior Elizabeth Brightwell are tied for 33rd at 1-over 73. Sophomore Melissa Edmonson is in 49th place at 2-over 74.
Florida's Isabelle Lendle and Auburn's Marta Sanz lead the field at 5-under 67. The second round is set for Monday and the final round will take place Tuesday. Live scoring of the tournament is online at Golfstat.com.
