Bryan, Texas - Thanks to under-par rounds from senior Elizabeth Brightwell and sophomore Lauren Coughlin, the 16th-ranked Virginia women's golf team finished second at Texas A&M's "Mo" Morial Tournament in Bryan, Texas. Virginia shot 1-over 289 during Wednesday's play for a 54-hole total of 883. Kentucky won the 12-team tournament at 872.
Brightwell moved all the way up to a sixth-place finish thanks to a 3-under 69 during her closing round. She ended play with a score of 3-over 219 to post the third top-10 outing during her career.
Coughlin shot 1-under 71 to tie for seventh place at 4-over 220. It was the best finish of her career and equaled her low tournament score.
Junior Briana Mao placed just outside of the top-10 with a score of 5-over 221. She shot 73 during the final round to finish in 11th place. Freshman Lauren Diaz-Yi was 22nd in her collegiate debut at 225 and senior Portland Rosen rounded out UVa's scoring at 231 to place 37th.
Virginia had three players competing as non-scoring individuals at the event. Sophomore Alex Hershberger had the best performance of that group, placing 24th at 226, her best tournament finish. Freshman Evie Dole was 29th at 229 and junior Kaira Martin was 43rd at 232.
Kentucky's Haley Mills took medalist honors at 3-under 213.
The Cavaliers return to play Sept. 20-22 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn.
