Franklin, TN -- The Virginia women's golf team lived up to its preseason top-10 ranking by opening the season with a seventh-place finish at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Championship. The Cavaliers finished the 54-hole tournament with a three-day score of 884, just three shots off its school tournament scoring record.

Defending NCAA Champion Duke won its second straight Mason Rudolph title by three shots (863) over third-ranked Georgia. UCLA, ranked fifth, was third at 872 while No. 12 Arizona was fourth at 875, No. 8 Purdue was fifth at 881, No. 17 Stanford was sixth at 883, one shot ahead of Virginia. Wake Forest, ranked 11th, tied the Cavaliers for seventh place.

The 15-team field included 12 teams ranked in Golfweek's preseason top-25 poll.

Virginia was led by its top two qualifiers, senior Leah Wigger and Jennie Arseneault. They tied for 16th at 3-over 219, including identical final round scores of 1-over 73. UVa's best final round score was Rachel Smith's 72. She moved up to 42nd overall at 10-over 226.

Carly Truitt rounded out UVa's scoring on the final round with a 78 to place 50th at 229. Lauren Mielbrecht shot 79 on Sunday to place 55th at 230.

"For this being our first tournament, it was a good start to the year," said Virginia coach Jan Mann. "The field here was very strong and the course was set up to be very challenging. There were some tough pins today. You always want to come home the winner, but considering this was our first time out this season, finishing seventh among these 15 teams is a good start to the year."

Arizona's Alison Walshe used a final round score of 67 to move up from seventh place to win medalist honors by two shots.

The Cavaliers return to action Sept. 22 for the Fall Preview to be held in Dayton Beach.
