Chapel Hill, NC - Battling through rainy, wet conditions, the ninth-ranked Virginia women's golf team is tied for third place after the opening round of North Carolina's Lady Tar Heel Invitational taking place at the Finley Golf Course. The Cavaliers shot 15-over 303 and are tied with defending NCAA Champion Duke on the leaderboard. Vanderbilt leads the 17-team field at 301 while Tennessee is second at 302.
Jennie Arseneault and Kristen Simpson led Virginia during the first round with 3-over 75s. Whitney Neuhauser, playing in her first collegiate event, shot 76 to stand 21st. Leah Wigger carded a 77 and is 34th while Rachel Smith shot 79 and is 47th.
Duke's Jennie Lee is in first place overall. She was the only player to shoot even par 72. The tournament's start was delayed until late morning due to lightning in the area.
