Charlottesville, Va. - The 19th-ranked Virginia women's golf team will play in the second annual Darius Rucker Intercollegiate that starts Friday, March 8, and runs through Sunday, March 10. The 15-team field will compete at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
The field for this year's tournament includes Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona State, Auburn, Furman, Georgia, LSU, North Carolina, South Carolina, TCU, Tennessee, UCF, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. Seven of those teams are ranked in the current Golfstat top-25 poll. North Carolina is No. 3, Alabama is No. 4, Arkansas is No. 8, Vanderbilt is No. 11, Georgia is No. 14 and ASU is No. 17.
Last year Virginia finished fifth at the tournament that was shorted to 36 holes due to inclement weather. Alabama won the inaugural event. UVa's Altomare and Mao tied for seventh at 3-over 145.
In February, Virginia opened the spring portion of its schedule by finishing fifth at the 18-team UCF Challenge. Mao took medalist honors, winning the first tournament in her career.
Altomare leads the Cavaliers in stroke average at 72.53 while Mao stands at 74.92, the second best on the team among players who have appeared in more than one tournament. Altomare is ranked No. 19 among individuals in the latest Golfweek standings.
