Stanford, CA - The 13th-ranked Virginia women's golf team is tied for first place following the opening round of the NCAA West Regional Championship at the Stanford Golf Course. The Cavaliers shot 7-over 291 on the par-71 course and are tied with seventh-ranked Arizona. Top-ranked UCLA and No. 24 California are both one shot behind the co-leaders. The top eight teams from the tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships.

Virginia freshman Brittany Altomare led the Cavaliers by shooting 1-under 70. She is tied for third place in the 122-player field. Junior Calle Nielson shot 1-over 72 and is in 13th place. Freshman Nicole Agnello carded a 2-over 73 and is in 19th place. Redshirt freshman Lauren Greenlief and junior Joy Kim both posted scores of 5-over 76 and are in 47th place.

San Jose State's Madeleine Ziegert leads the field at 4-under 67.

"It was a very good start for us," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "We played very consistent today, which is what we needed to do because this is the first time we have competed on this course. I think we left some shots out there, so we are pleased, but also feel we can play better."

The second round of the tournament takes place Friday and the final 18 holes are scheduled for Sunday. Virginia starts its second round at 1:26 p.m. while teamed with Ohio State and Stanford. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
